CU Boulder Racing Team Members in Industry
CU Boulder Racing Team alumni take the hands-on experience they gained building and racing cars and move into cutting-edge roles across the automotive and engineering industries. Participation on the team builds technical skills, collaboration experience, and project leadership that employers value in high-performance engineering roles and in the automotive racing front. Our Team offers students the ability to experience what a college curriculum simply cannot replicate, and allows a rare entry into motorsport competitions across the nation. Our member and alumni database have shown outstanding success in obtaining internships, jobs, and operating at a high-level in the professional world.
Loni Unser is a fourth-generation American racing driver carrying forward one of the most famous names in motorsport. A member of the legendary Unser family, she grew up surrounded by racing history and developed her own passion behind the wheel. Unser is a CU Boulder Racing Team alum.
Unser officially launched her competitive career in endurance and sports car racing. Her first win came in 2018 in a World Racing League (WRL) endurance event, and she went on to clinch the Eastern Championship in WRL in 2020. She made history in the Mazda MX-5 Cup by becoming the first woman to finish in the top 10 in back-to-back races at St. Petersburg in 2021, and secured the WRL national title in 2022.
She has also taken on the famous Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. In her rookie Pikes Peak run in 2022, Loni finished second in the Porsche Pikes Peak Trophy class, further anchoring her place in the family’s legacy at the demanding mountain course.
In recent seasons, Unser has competed in the Porsche Sprint Challenge North America with Kellymoss, consistently fighting at the front. In 2024 she ended strong with multiple podiums and a top-three finish in Cayman Pro/Am class standings, and in 2025 she earned her first Porsche Sprint Challenge victory at Watkins Glen, after several near-miss podium results.
Loni has balanced her racing with roles off the track, including sponsorship partnerships like her 2024 season backing from Speedway Motors, and has become a role model for the next generation of racers while honoring her family’s rich motorsport heritage.
Nick Strickler is an American race car driver known for his pursuit of success in stock car competition, particularly within the European NASCAR Series. He made history as one of the few Americans to compete full-time in EuroNASCAR, showcasing his skills on Europe’s iconic road courses with teams like Racingfuel Motorsport and later Marko Stipp Motorsport.
Strickler’s racing journey began with grassroots competition and during his time with the CU Boulder Racing Team, built from years of dedication to motorsport and a drive to pursue racing at the highest possible levels. His transition to EuroNASCAR marked a significant milestone in his career, as he competed in both EuroNASCAR Pro and EuroNASCAR 2 categories against seasoned international drivers.
Across his career, Strickler’s legacy centers on expanding American presence in international stock car racing and his perseverance through diverse racing environments, from national short tracks to the European NASCAR stage.
Liam Travis is a CU Boulder Racing Team alum who has taken his engineering career to the highest level of motorsport, joining the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team in the United Kingdom as a Graduate Mechanical Design Engineer. He graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder in May 2023 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Computer Science, then continued his education at Cranfield University, earning a Master of Science in Advanced Motorsports Engineering.
Travis spent four years as a core member of the CU Boulder Racing Team and played a major role in shaping the program. He began on the Chassis team within Formula SAE, focusing on vehicle dynamics and designing suspension geometry for one of the team’s early Formula SAE cars. His technical ability and leadership led him to the role of Chief Chassis Engineer, where he developed bellcranks, anti-roll bar systems, wheel assemblies, and numerous other critical components.
He first represented the team at FSAE Las Vegas in 2021 and then contributed across several competition seasons through the CB4 vehicle. In his final year, Travis served as both CUBRT President and FSAE Chief Engineer. That season he led the design of the CB4 suspension, frame, and uprights, helping the team pass technical inspection for the first time and achieve a 20th-place finish in Michigan.
Since joining Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team, Travis has worked on a wide range of race car systems. His responsibilities have included the design and integration of brake and hydraulic lines, driver drink systems, and various driver fit and cockpit components such as protective covers and packaging solutions. He has also contributed to garage setup and alignment equipment used trackside, directly supporting the preparation and optimization of the car during race weekends.
His impact on CU Boulder Racing continues to be felt today, and the foundation he helped build supports the team’s current success. The program is proud to see Travis advance to Formula One and looks forward to following his career in the years ahead.
“Once part of CU Boulder Racing, you are part of our thriving community for life.”
