Top 10 finish highlights 1st ChampCar entry for the CU Boulder Racing Team.
Over the weekend of July 27th and 28th, the CU Boulder Racing Team travelled to the Utah Motorsports Campus in Erda, Utah along with car 720 to compete in the TireRack.com ChampCar Endurance Series’ “Salt Lake Eights”.
Arriving early Friday morning, the small team of eight that travelled spent the day setting up the team’s garage and pit spot and doing last minute preparations to the car. With all work done on the vehicle, 720 passed tech on the first go with no issues found, a first in the team’s history.
With head driver in the car for the first stint on Saturday morning, the team rose the timing charts up into 4th overall position. By the end of the day, the team had dropped back down the order to 7th position.
Going into Sunday’s race, the team started in 5th position thanks to the reverse random starting order from Saturday’s race. As the day progressed, the team dropped to down to 9th, just holding on to a top 10 position. Thanks to some late race luck, two teams ahead dropped out due to reliability issues, promoting car 720 up into 7th position, where we would finish the day.
After a solid 16 hours of racing with zero issues, another first for the CU Boulder Racing Team, car 720 finished in 7th position, completing a total of 215 laps, 18 laps down on the overall winning V8 Pontiac Trans Am driven by Bandits Racing.
With the summer race season behind us, the team is hoping to continue building upon the foundation of success season over the past few months. Hopefully podiums and eventually race wins will be possible in the near future.
Next race: “A Sebring NYE” – December 28th – 29th, 2019 – Sebring International Raceway – Sebring, FL
